Earnings

Delta Air Lines, Inc. (DAL)

  • 3Q26 Revenue: $20.2B, +32.9% YoY, beat estimates by $1.28B
  • 3Q26 Non-GAAP EPS: $1.72, miss estimates by $0.04
  • 4Q26 Guidance: Management expects revenue growth of approximately 20%, operating margin of 7–9% and adjusted EPS of US$1.15–1.65. The midpoint of Q4 EPS guidance is slightly below consensus as Delta assumes an all-in fuel price of approximately US$4.25/gallon
  • FY26 Guidance: Cut FY26 adjusted EPS guidance substantially to US$5.10–5.60 from US$6.50–7.50 previously and reduced free cash flow guidance to approximately US$2.5B from US$3–4B.
  • Dividend/Share Buyback: Maintained the quarterly dividend at US$0.215/share, following the approximately 15% increase announced earlier this year. Management continues to prioritize deleveraging, with more than US$2B of debt reduction targeted for FY26, rather than aggressive buybacks.
  • Comment: This was an unusually strong revenue quarter but a weak earnings quarter. Demand is not the problem: adjusted revenue increased 16% on essentially flat capacity, unit revenue rose 15%, premium and corporate travel remain resilient and Delta expects revenue growth to accelerate to approximately 20% in Q4. This suggests Delta has significant pricing power and that consumers have so far absorbed substantial fare increases without a meaningful deterioration in demand. The key issue is fuel. Delta is now absorbing roughly US$6B of incremental FY26 fuel expense, forcing management to cut the full-year EPS outlook by roughly 24% at the midpoint despite record revenue. Q3 adjusted operating margin contracted 170bps, and Q4 assumes fuel at US$4.25/gallon. Management has indicated that further industry capacity restraint may be necessary in 2027 because airlines cannot simply grow their way out of such a large cost shock. The positive offset is that Delta’s premium mix, American Express economics, refinery exposure and stronger balance sheet leave it better positioned than most U.S. peers to weather the environment. Shares initially fell roughly 4% pre-market following the EPS miss and guidance cut but recovered to finish around US$82, indicating that a substantial portion of the fuel-driven earnings reset was already priced in. The principal variables to monitor are jet-fuel prices, fare increases and yield retention, 2027 capacity discipline, premium and corporate demand, non-fuel unit costs, refinery profitability and whether FY27 EPS estimates can stabilize. At approximately US$82, valuation is reasonable, but the sharp FY26 earnings cut, and continued fuel uncertainty prevent a higher-conviction bullish stance. 4Q26 recommended trading range: $74 to $94. Neutral Outlook.
